Regeneration of 1200 homes across three estates including improved energy use, space economy, insulation and recycled heat. Included demolition work plus new housing and multi-storey blocks. The project involved resident consultation.

Our philosophy to resident consultation is rooted in the spirit of partnership.

Upton McGougan is an Investor in People demonstrating its approach to treating people (whether staff, Clients, associates or end-users of building work) with respect and consideration.

Our ability to work in partnership with the surrounding community has been demonstrated on various schemes, most notably this regeneration project for Tower Hamlets Housing Action Trust.

This scheme involved considerable resident consultation as well as detailed liaison with the Client and fellow professionals (one architect for each estate).

The project was in an area of social challenge and spanned three estates comprising over 1200 homes, mainly in 1960's / 1970's medium and high-rise blocks.

Challenges & innovations

These homes were inefficient to heat, under heated and damp. The strategy involved demolition of the existing blocks and replacement with new low-rise apartments and 2/3 storey houses.

The Company created common standards for all three estates to ensure that there were no grounds for complaint with the residents. For each estate full resident consultation processes were utilized including newsletters, door to door resident consultation, resident steering committees, a day time and evening resident consultation forums and design exhibition / displays.

Similar resident consultation measures have, or are being used, on residential schemes for the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea and the London Borough of Lambeth.
